I have recieved a phone call from the company that is installing the fibre optic cables accross the entrance to our field.
They hope to complete the works on Sunday March 10 to mimimise the effect on the local businesses as they have to cut the power to the area to run the cables. So the short end of the stick is that we may not have access to the field on that day.

A work colleague is moving house shortly and has nowhere to store all his toys in his new house therefore he needs to off load a number them. There are a variety of models, some still in original boxes, some which were flown many years ago then put to one side.
Have a browse and if you are interested make an offer and I will pass it onto him.

Cheers

I have asked these questions, received many answers & when I speak to newbies at the field, try to pass on some of the basics I have learnt.
Better it comes from people more experienced than me, but sometimes when we start reading up on things, we lack terminology knowledge & thusly some useful info gets lost in translation.
I found this site early in my progression in this hobby & is still useful in learning aerobatics.

Hope you newbies find this site as useful as I did,

I know a few of us have one, but I couldn't find a thread already in place.

I've only just got around to assembling my replacement airframe kit after having it boxed away for over a year. The details of the power train ....

Motor: Turnigy NTM 3542 - 1000kV (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...00KV_700W.html)
ESC: Turnigy Trust 45A (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html)
Prop and hub: Durafly P-51/P-47 which from my measurements seems to be a 10x6x4 but it hasn't got that indicated anywhere, so I can't be sure.
Batteries: 3S 2200mAh Nanotech

Static test result: 38 Amps, 1400g thrust

The plane is just a fraction nose-heavy with this configuration, I've got a little moving-around to do to correct that. Overall performance is just what I was after - it's not a bullet, but it has acceptable top speed for a low pass and climbs really well. It's not really that efficient because I think the top 15% to 20% of the throttle movement results in more power consumption for practically no return in either speed or thrust so I might make an end-point adjustment to save the wastage there. Predictably, the heavy prop on a 1000kV motor results in a tendency to roll to the left just after take-off, but once you're ready for that it's easy to deal with - certainly not a hazardous problem. I wanted to use the prop for its semi-scale looks. The Durafly Mustang and Thunderbolt have 750kV motors, which is probably more sensible with this prop - I might experiment with a change to the motor one day, but for the moment everything is pretty good so I'll leave it as is.

A great model and all the things I've read about it over the past couple of months are verified in my experience. I wish I'd put it together months ago.

The next thing to do is do the flap mod and then an individual paint job. Here's a couple of shots of the business-end with the prop on display ...

I some times have a look around the net for info in an attempt to find answers to some puzzel or another that's plauging me. Mostly this raises more questions than finds answers, but it's often an interesting journey.

Here's a web page devoted to propellors and propellor design for model aircraft. Besides the very well written technical articles which are many and detailed there are some very nicely made carbon props offered for sale.

If your ever wanting for some not so light reading to test your grey matter thoroughly, then I can recomend having a detailed look at performance propellor design!!

Thought I'd post some of the "games" I play these days. I only say game because their fun but in most cases they're physics simulations or sandboxes to make your own fun in some form or another. You will need a beefy PC to run the majority of these and a joystick or game controller of some kind to get the most out of them.

Kerbal Space Program
Cost: $23USD
This is a sandbox game where you literally design and fly your own space ships and space planes. It's made by an independent studio in mexico and is stlil in development with new awesome features being added monthly.

Here are some vids of people having fun with KSP.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6e3AgLL4I0

DCS World
Cost: Free for base module, Addon modules cost $20-40
This series is currently the ultimate in consumer combat flight simulations, The level of detail presented in the A-10 and Ka-50 modules means that if you want to fly them right, you need to know what EVERY switch in the cockpit does and how to operate their complex weapons management systems. The physics are on the same level as military simulators. Only then do you get to blow stuff up like this!

Here is a good overview of the series:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKhhHI-wiME

X-Plane 10
Cost: $70USD
X-plane has always been the direct competitor to MS Flight Simulator and now that MSFS is no more (In consumer form) X-plane is where most consumers have gone to get their general aviation simming on. Unlike MSFS, X-planes physics have always been based on actual simulation of airfoils and air passing over them and because of this, you can actually design and fly your own planes in X-plane! I've used it in the past to test RC Model concepts that have accurately translated to the real world.

Here is some footage I filmed in a custom (yet plausible) fighter jet design.

Lockheed Martin - Prepar3D
Cost: $49.95 (Academic license)
Microsoft cancelled their consumer Flight Simulator product a few years back, They also had a professional simulator called ESP that has been licensed to Lockheed Martin and they have continued developing it, ironing out the old MS bugs and improving performance ever since. Its basically FSX on steroids. Technically its not for consumer use but that hasn't stopped alot of the simming community from picking it up for their own "academic" purposes.

Project CARS
Cost: Varies
Project Community Assisted Racing Simulation was started by a team of simracing enthusiasts to make the ultimate racing game, Rather than fund via publishers who usually ruin games by demanding arcade physics and dumbing down, they turned to the Simracing community for funding. In exchange for a nominal fee, you can be involved in the development process and make suggestions and vote om features Its not due for release till later this year but there are monthly and weekly builds of the game to play with and its already very fun with a steering wheel controller. They have included the most realistic rendition of Bathurst in a racing title thus far.

These are community made trailers... It really looks this good!

Rigs of Rods
Cost: Free!
Basically a Tonka trucks sandbox, you pick a truck and drive around and pick stuff up and explore, If you've ever wanted to try to drive a bendy bus or B-Double rig, here you go!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3A6OHnAD_Pc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQkWQmethEY

NoLimits - Rollercoaster Simulator
Cost: $29.95USD
Ever wanted to design and build your own rollercoaster? This is the tool to do it with! Multiple track types, Realistic car physics, Before I started flying, I could easily spend a Saturday designing a killer rollercoaster then adding scenery etc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AG1n6-5ce0Y

Bridge-It
Cost: $23.95USD
There are a few bridge building games out there, this one has the best graphics. The aim of them all is to build an efficient bridge with finite tools, Requires some engineering thought and lots of triangles and arches!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ0EMLCPaPA

Vehicle Simulator (Formerly Virtual Sailor)
Cost: $30USD
This game is made by a solo developer, started out as a sailing/boating simulator, its now progressed to simulating cars & planes as well as boats.

Here are some trailers I made in the version before it became vehicle simulator

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2IFZBpV9M8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GztbkyPkyVM

I supposed I should list my weapons of choice as well.

HOTAS Flight stick (New):
Saitek X-65f Combat Stick
This is a force sensitive stick (Like what real F16's have). It doesn't actually move but has a strain gauge measuring the forces I impart on the stick. Makes for very very accurate flying.

HOTAS Flight stick (Old):
Logitech G960
I have this stick/throttle/rudder combo up for sale to the right person at the right price, It was lightly used as I got it just before taking up flying, it gathered lots of dust. Has force feedback so you feel the forces of wind buffeting your aircraft etc. I didn't have room for it. Logitech don't make them anymore so now its a collectors item!

Driving Wheel:
Logitech Driving Force GT
A nice racing wheel that can be had for around $110 or less if you look hard enough.

Head Tracking:
NaturalPoint TrackIR
A revolutionary head tracking system; You move & turn your head slightly with 6 degrees of freedom and your view moves in game! This works on basically every title above and is very intuitive once you get used to it.

This is the tip of the ice berg really of my physic sim games that I play, if people are interested I'll list more!

Hi Guys
I thought I would start a thread were people can paste links for stuff that comes up on RC trader that might be of interest to club members.
I get an automatic update every 24 hours and occasioanlly you can pick up some really good deals if you are quick.

Here is the link to the fist one I thought some of our club members might find a bargain.

New plane . EDF 70 JET .
DATA . 1.34KG - flying weight .
BATT - 2600 MAH 4S 25C
ESC - 45 AMP
SERVOS- typical cheapies but mounted well, allowing plenty of throw , and a steerable servo fitted at nose wheel .nice gauge control rods .
RECIVER - SPEKTRUM 6 CHANNEL WITH SATELLITE DSMX.
RUNNING LOAD - 39 AMP / 575 WATTS
THRUST - LESS THAN 1:1
FLIGHT TIME FULL THRUST - static test 3 min .

what do i think pre flight . Light for an edf with almost 1m wing span .@1050gm , quick and easy no fuss build , parts fit well and work , but no spar in wings , no re inforcement . i'll fly it with this in mind and not do acrabatics , so high expo and minimal throws for edf sport flying will be the go .
ive yest to come across an EDF with more tha 1:1 power to weight .
i have a 4S ALLOY EDF LANDER UNIT THERE WHICH WILL PULL 1000W @ 1.7KG OF THRUST . however that would add about 150 gm weight and draw some serious mah out of the pack , youtube seems to show some nice flying and good speed and power with this EDF JET .
IT'S ready for its maiden . !!!!!!

Having recently got the urge to do some scratch building, with there being some unallocated balsa sheet lying about and feeling the ever increasing need for speed. It only required one more small coincidence to trigger the beginning of yet another lunch time project.
Well that coincidence came in the form of a phone call from an old aero-modelling friend in South Australia. While Doug was telling me about some drawings he'd recently acquired for what looked like a nice little speed 400 racer, a plan began to fall into place.

Speed 400 racers I'm guessing were a popular class of plane based on the old brushed type motor of the same name. By the look of it, this model is designed to go as fast as anything can, being towed around by the afore mentioned power-plant and fed by bunch of Ni-cads.

It’s a design from way back in the 90s and looks like it would really benefit from an upgraded power plant and some Lipos. It should fly pretty nicely once all that is sorted out.

As you can imagine, it wasn't long before an envelope containing a copy of the plans turned up in my mail box.

Here's a look at them.

Been fiddling with the TX for over a week now and only just starting to understand the menu's and settings.
This radio has heaps and heaps of features, mixes, and safety built in which I quite impressive.
Only been able to program 1 plane into the TX and will test on the weekend.

Overall impressed with the radio with my only complaint the x-cursor button, you have to press hard on the up cursor for it to register.
