some initial tests with wattmeter tonight have me wondering what will be best prop choice for "helen"..

all results are on 60 amp turnigy plush , 2200mah turnigy 3s 30-40c batts, 35-42 1250 kv turnigy outrunner, first 11x 7 test was done at 12.5volts last t28 prop was at 12.2 volts..

11x7 prop = 848 watts = 79 amps @ 3/4 throttle and got scared!
10x7 prop = 680 watts = over 80 amps @ WOT
9x6 prop = 544 watts = 49 amps @ WOT
10x6 nitro prop = 520 watts = 50 amps @ WOT
9.5x7.5(standard t28) prop = 607 watts = 57 amps @ WOT

clearly there is enough power but i will burn out the motor at extended WOT. it is also clear to me now that i have chosen the wrong variation on the motor and that i would have been better off with the 1000 kv version. all part of the learning process i guess , dad is bringing over an 8 x 6 to test tomorrow and im also thinking 9 and 10 inch props with less pitch although i think this amp situation may affect the end result as i was looking for endless vertical.

Kev That motor definitely has some grunt.
Do you know the Cont Running current of the motor which will help ?
For Myself, not sure how everyone else does it, i work on the Cont Current of Motor EG 40 amp as my basis
and then allow 30 % - 50% on top for short power bursts at Max amps EG 50 % = 60 amps.
I have notice that bench testing Motors with props on there seems to be more resistance on motor as it is being held back from moving, Where as in flight there would less resistance as plane is following behind not holding it back with only plane weight.
Plane weight and resistance would be at max on Vertical.
So with that thinking i assume the Actual max current would be less 10-20 % Eg 48 amps
Motors normally can take 20 % more than their rated cont current Eg 40 amps = 20% 48 amps
I am yet to prove my theory, buy installing a watt meter in my plane and record max amps during flight and then compare with my bench test max amps to see if I'm right or wrong.

Prop consideration is important, a decent size prop to size of plane as need to push air passed the huge front cowling of Trojan

Thats my 2 cents worth (rounded up to 5 cents these days) Biggrin

thought id just keep posting as i go , i mean why not eh.. 8-)

This is a template i found on the net, hoping it suits the application as i definately have not overthought the aerodynamics here.. just went for it.

voila! two flaps.. Lol at this point i thought it smart to go watch a movie with my missus.. Wink

as i mentioned b4 i have servos in already so ill do the hinges and linkages tuesday night and repost (need it flying by saturday) also retested with standard t28 prop and had a usable 350-400 watts at round 38-40 amp halfish throttle, i i think motor rated at 45 amps so i guess this will be acceptable if im careful just to get her flying..
im thinking perhaps a 10x4 if there is such a thing.. ill keep experimenting

ok guys apart from glueing servo's in and retaping underside im done with my flap mod. i know the plane didnt really need flaps and some said dont ruin wing and stuff but from where i stood the plane was a write off when i started rebuilding anyway so it was a good time to try it, anyways is done now and for the most part im happy with the attempt, i like the look of the warbirds with flaps but i wonder if it will fly , ill see on saturday Biggrin

Well done Kev, Flaps turned out and work very well.
Can you adjust the flaps so you can have halfway down as well.
I know on my Hopper, my custom Flaps i have a Dial Knob on my Transmitter so i can adjust Rate of Flap down to desired level during Flight.
With a Switch style setup you want two rates i Guess Half down and all down.

Great Job Again. Smile

well at the moment steve im trying to work out a better way of operating them , im struggling alittle with the mixing and stuff but was thinking if there was a way to use a second switch with dual rates of the first mix i might be able to have a 2 stage flap but if not i just want to try and set them at one position half of the current amount of flap. im looking to try and improve to the settings on saturday...

Your radio only really supports 2 flight modes which means you only have one flap down stage setting. This is fine as you only need all or nothing. The servo's should be connected to Flap and Gear on the receiver and you have a mix setup to actuate the gear in tune with the flap channel (Master=Flap, Slave=Gear)

best part of it is the way it flies now.. Icon_twisted

Quick Question Regarding Stock T28 Motor And Esc.
Does anyone have Specs on Stock Motor handy, as i am curious if it will take a 4s lipo, i assuming the Esc should be Ok.

Steve,

I've got Kev's stock T28 ESC in the Gunfighter now.
It's a 30amp esc and says 3-4cell LiPo.
Don't know about motor but I would say that as they came as a pair
that they should both be ok with 4 cell battery.

Hi All T28'ers
Just wondering what batteries are used/recommened for a Stock T28? I think my missus may be getting me a PNP version for my birthday later this month and I wanna get a couple of batteries to take it flying. Also, any suggestions as to a good/cheap charger will be gratefully accepted Biggrin

Yep, definitely the Accucel 6 for a charger. For batteries, I'd recommend 1 or 2 of these at the moment: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... oduct=9394

yep i agree with kieren on those batteries also, i use them exclusively at the moment and they been brilliant. i push them as hard as i can in my beefed up trojan and they havent puffed yet when delivery huge amps, i also notice quite a bit of difference in punch between these and the lower 25 c rated version..

just as a comparison, after i burnt out the 35-42 1250 kv ive now replaced with a more conservative 35-36 910kv to increase run time and return it closer to standard power setup.test were with 3s 2200mah 30c batts and 4s 3000mah 20c batts ,my result with the 910kv are as follows:

3s 12x8 MAS 35 amp 384 watts
4s 12x8 too much , up round 1000 watts (unusable)
3s 10 x 7 MAS 22 amp 250 watts
4s 10 x 7 MAS 32 amp 500 watts
3s 11 x 7 MAS 23 amps 280 watts
4s 11x7 MAS 32 amps 496 watts.

i guess ill just run the 11 x 7 and can use both 3 and 4s batteries.. either way it was better than the
3s on the 1250 kv motor for 49 amps 544 watts or the 4s on 1250 kv for 1050 watts at like 80 plus amps.. both of that was with a 9 x 6 also so the bigger 11 inch prop should feel good on her..

Just got some more Rx for my Dx7 and Programming in Rates, Expo etc

What is everyone putting in for Expo and more importantly Throw Rates as default is 100% but wasn't sure to increase this to 150 % ?

I understand everyone is going to have different opinions etc but im just trying to get a feel of what i should set it up for especially throw rate %
