Archive: Flying this Weekend...

Well took the Gunfighter for a few flights today
and I'm really impressed with the new T28 ESC and APC 11x7 prop.
The wind was a bit blustery but she handled it quite well.
She moved very nicely with the wind behind her and held a nice straight
line going into the wind. Smile
I had moved the pushrods in a hole on the aileron control horns but this made her a bit touchy
in the windy conditions. Brought her down and put rods back to original spots and she handled real nice.
The 2200mah Battery worked well and I easily got 6-7 minute flight times mostly on
3/4 to full throttle.
With better management I reckon I will get at least 9 minutes. Smile
I'm getting very comfortable with the plane now and my landings are much improved
on my early efforts.
There was only Steve,Kieran and myself flying today although John did come down and watch
for awhile. Steve and I even outlasted Kieran who decided that he had enough of the wind
and packed up and left. Smile
Hope the weekend weather is good as I can't wait to go up again

Yes Paul's Gunfighter flew really well with great pilot control.
Enjoyed watching it fly and land nicely Biggrin , Though i still think it would make things interesting if we stuck half dozen windsocks on runway for it to contend with Lol
Yes it was quite windy but it is a great experience and confidence booster to fly in less favorable conditions, makes flying in great conditions so much easier and with more confidence.

For those who may be thinking of flying this arvo, beware inclement weather.

May lightning repeatedly strike the power lines and melt them into a glowing metallic pulp.

TAF SUMMARY:
A HIGH IN THE TASMAN IS DIRECTING A NORTHERLY FLOW OVER SYDNEY, AND
IS BRINGING SOME LOW CLOUD. THE CLOUD SHOULD LIFT AND MOSTLY CLEAR BY
MID MORNING. WINDS AT THE AIRPORT WILL BE LIGHT NORTH TO NORTHWEST AT
FIRST TENDING NORTHEAST LATER THIS MORNING. A FRESH SOUTHERLY CHANGE
IS EXPECTED TO REACH THE AIRPORT THIS EVENING, WITH LOW CLOUD
INCREASING AGAIN OVERNIGHT. THUNDERSTORMS ARE LIKELY TO FORM ABOUT
THE FAR WESTERN SUBURBS THIS AFTERNOON, AND THERE IS THE CHANCE THAT
THE AIRPORT WOULD BE AFFECTED.

THUNDERSTORM POTENTIAL:
CHANCE WITHIN 20NM OF SYDNEY AIRPORT THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING.

OTHER POSSIBILITIES:

10% CHANCE THE LOW CLOUD WILL NOT BREAK BEFORE MIDDAY TODAY.
TIMING OF THE SOUTHERLY CHANGE +/- 2 HOURS.

SYDNEY OUTLOOK:
SATURDAY : CHANCE AFTERNOON SHOWER/THUNDERSTORM. CITY MAX: 26
SUNDAY : RAIN PERIODS. CITY MAX: 20

OPERATIONAL PLANNING, REFERENCE SHOULD BE MADE TO THE LATEST TAF OR

Great day for flying today
and a lot less carnage than last week.
With one exception ........ "Gunfighter" went in on last flight of the day
as I badly over corrected to avoid a potential mid air on launch.
At full power and low height I just couldn't correct in time.
Anyway, the fuselage broke almost at the same place as last week but
this time the cowling and spinner disintegrated on impact.
Quick trip down to Ultimate Hobbies and I got myself a new cowl and
decided to replace the wing as it had been damaged last week.
Came home and quickly accessed the other damage and decided to bite the bullet
and order a complete new airframe (Fuselage, wing, cockpit, tail, cowl, spinner).
I had read on the rcgroups website that Atomic Hobbies in the USA were doing a great deal
on these parts and I have ended up getting the total including shipping to Australia for $104 Aust. Biggrin
Estimated time to delivery is approx 10 days.
Looks like Gunfighter will be missing next weekend but never fear she will be back bigger and brighter than
ever. Smile

Sorry to hear That the Gunfighter Went down in Battle Paul.
Its Good to hear that you got it sorted and ready to be back in action as i do enjoy watching it fly as it a great scale model plane.

Sorry to hear about the gunfighter. Have to say I am suitably chuffed about the Siren's performance! The decision to run 4s at 3am this morning although I will need to do something about the cooling as the temps are near BBQ territory! Long term running may be on 3s with the 4s coming out whenever I need to help boost the International Space Station back into orbit Wink

Sounds like I missed out on a great days flying again. Second weekend in a row that I've had to work both saturday and sunday  and I'll be doing the same next weekend too  . Can't wait to get back down to the field...

Just sitting here looking at the gunfighter and thinking that
in a couple of weeks I'll not only have a nice new one but I'll probably have
enough pieces left over to restore the old one. A La Kev's T28. Wink
I might do a repaint to disguise the obvious damage and do some experiments with
a couple of things. i.e. cheap HC retracts or fixed Undercarriage. Possibly change appearance
to Mustang "B" model using K&A Models conversion kit and then repaint as a Tuskegee Airplane. Smile
I really love the Mustangs and reckon it would be cool to have both.

Now that's very interesting Paul! So, if I understand this correctly, you put your own servos, ESC, motor and receiver in place and you've got the complete machine? Is the motor mounting hardware in the airframe too? That sounds like something I'd be interested in doing too, perhaps in a couple of weeks time - thanks for putting us on to it.
Cheers,

Just goes to show you can't keep a good Gunfighter down! Thanks for the tip I will certainly check out that supplier. I phoned Kellets this week and was told they are expecting bnf P51s in a week or two. After watching your's flying I was thinking of getting one.

KevinB

Chris, after resting in the shade of your tent, which I did appreciate, I went down to SuperCheap to get my own, turns out they have two models, the standard one for $139 and a Delux one for $199. I'm pretty sure your's was the delux one but thought I should check?

cheers
KevinB

Hi Steve,
Not sure about motor mount but it includes fuselage,(painted) cockpit, cowl, tail,
wing,spinner and pushrods.
You have to put in your own servo's motor, esc, receiver etc.
Don't think it includes the additional pushrod or hardware for the rudder modification.

Thanks Paul - your run-down on the P-51 parts makes sense. I guess they wouldn't include hardware for the optional rudder modification but the other gear is just fine for anyone wanting to get a Gunfighter into the air with their own electronics and power-train. It sounds like a good option, I hope they have that special offer for the next couple of weeks - I notice they have something similar for the newly released PZ ME-109G too .... hmm, too many options Smile

Gday All

Bummer that I could not fly on Saturday, hope all who flew had a good one.
Great to hear the Siren is up Kieran, not surprised you are cooking the electrics, we would expect nothing less from you. How in gods name did you fit a 4S in that fuselage, from memory you don't have a lot of width/ space to play with?
Sad to hear the "Gunfighter" took a terminal hit, my thoughts went immediately to the name which has a "Live by the Sword Die by the Sword" feel to it, I can only suggest renaming the replacement something like "Girly Shopper" or "Fluffy Bunny" to try and steer away from the warlike stuff and the related warlike damage. Wink

Have been doing a bit of work on the glider however am considering geting a Multiplex Blizzard to tie me over until repairs are complete, need to do a bit more research though as I am not sure a Hot Liner would be suitable for our field.

In regards to Shade Tents I have ordered the Club a Coleman Event 14 Shade Shelter which will be donated. I work for Coleman so I get their stuff very very cheap. If anybody wants anything let me know and I will price it up for you. They make great chairs also!!!

Cheers

A very nice offer by you Rob.
I'm sure all members will appreciate the gesture.

Sorry mate no can do. Smile
It just wouldn't be a Mustang... Wink

I'm coming back with 2 Mustangs, one will be a new new "Gunfighter"
The other (complete with battle scars) will be appropriately named when the time comes. Icon_twisted
I have already stripped down the old airframe and completed repairs to fuselage. Remaking the horizon stab and elevators
out of half inch (12mm) balsa which will be much stronger than the 3mm depron stock ones.
A few other mods that are still too classified to speak of without A1 Security Clearance. Wink

That's it for the moment but I've only lost a battle not the war...... Icon_evil

Yes Rob Thanks In advance, I too am thinking of getting some sort of Easy to erect compact Shade shelter, as i think will all need some cover on those hot days, If you have time and its not an inconvenience let us know what Coleman has to offer and costing as I'm sure there are a lot of members that will be interested, and not just for use at field but for other outdoor outings with family etc.
As i have one but it is quite big to lug around that i bought from aldi a long time ago that i use for soccer outings.

Gday All

I have posted another thread in regards to Coleman stuff.
I can only reiterate that the pricing is red hot and I will pass these savings directly to you all.
As an indicator on pricing I can state that you take the retail price, kick the crap out of it, roll it in the mud and smash a T28 or two into it and you will be getting close!

Cheers
Rob B

Not gonna make it down on Saturday Frown Hope you all have a good one.

Sadly I wont make it down today either. Too many things on today. Should be down tomorrow morning instead.

Thanks guys - especially Steve & Chris for helping me get 2 5/8 (sorry for the imperial measurements here  ) really good flights. It was a pleasure to actually get on the sticks on my baby even though the wind did make it a challenge.

Thanks and congrats to Chris for the beautiful blind reed catch landing when the battery died.
Thanks and much kudos to Steve for rescuing an obviously stricken craft whn I got seriously blown off course!

Great to be in the air again. With some batteries from the latest HobbyKing order, I was able t oscore quick turnarounds.

A great first flight, followed by a loop easily but nervously performed in the second. A "pretty good" landing for my first - maybe a little over flared a little too early but nothing stopping me now... until I tried to take off. I made the mistake of trying to level up a right hand bank after takeoff by using more rudder and cartwheeled into the turf. Minimal front-end damage which has already been repaired Smile.

Thanks Steve for the tutoring and the post-fly show and tell.
