Videos: RC Flying

On the subject of Heli's. Here is a video I took of one of the guy's going for their Heli instructors ratings this weekend.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LjJJIfHXmc

I had the privilege of watching a few of George Atkinson's heli instruction lessons, He is easily the best Heli instructor in the country and right up there on the world stage. Picked up a few hints and tips that I'll be happy to pass along at the field.

Wow! I had a huge problem with orientation even watching!

I can appreciated the enormous skill involved in flying like that....intentionally. Smile

However, I agree with Darren who said, "They look like a fly hit with Mortein." Smile

I once watched a bloke out at the old SRCS club doing stuff like this - can't remember his name.
It was outrageous - and the sound of the machine was captivating.

I'm impressed with the number of in-flight cameras used and that bloke's missus did an excellent job of the video from the ground too!

Sorry that my video is not as exciting as the dog fight one, but the flying was pretty exciting for me anyway.

For a maiden with so many possibilities for failure, that was exceptional!

I hope it was just that you had to make room for the car rather than having to pout your toys away just because your wife cane home at the end Wink.

Yep, echo'ing my compliments on Youtube, looks and sounds great. You said it was vibrating but I was actually thinking it looked very smooth for a maiden, Well Done!

The rotor/tail wash chattering sounds awesome.

Thanks guys, for your comments

Drew: The potential for unhappiness is very high with any maiden. I think the build quality of the Align products , and careful construction, reduce the risk a lot. I was told some time ago, "Treat EVERY flight as a test flight, and every landing a bonus."

Gaz, I have you to thank for ahving me parting with all that money after seeing yours! I love it, Thank you. Smile I can't get over how "easy" it is to fly...particularly compared to the little Jet Ranger.

Kieran: I think the vibration was mainly due to an Extremely sensitive gyro/tail servo combo. It was working overtime to keep the nose straight & after I reduced the gain, the vibs reduced too. I'm still tweaking things so it will become as smooth as Garry's soon enough.....I hope. Smile Yeah the sound is Fantastic!!

Here's a quick flick of the small field we fly from at work.
It's surrounded by gum trees. note the 'S' turns before steep landing approach to wash off some speed.
Sadly there's a boarder of 2X4s at the edge of the ground plane, this paddock is used to test antenna's but we are able to fly in between calibrations Smile the plane survived unscathed it's the same machine as in my avitar.

Cheers

Jason

I was surprised at how fast that B-29 came in to land - didn't look like it had flaps, ... interesting.
I wonder what the X-1 was powered with?

The Spitfire glides quite well when the ESC stops working! Smile

I had the extra weight of the Benedini Sound System installed but not connected so the 3S was struggling. (Full power for level flight) Steve lent me a 4S which gave it "spirited" performance. Unfortunately the ESC (80amp) didn't want to play. I have just bought a new one & ground tests are fine.

Thank you Owen for videoing.

A bit of edited video from the testing the new Bi-quad antenna I made for my FPV set up.

It really does work much much better than the standard antenna that came with the video receiver. Despite being fixed and a directional antenna it didn't loose the video link at any stage over 3 flights and there seemed to be little if any interference or multi path problems that I half expected from the power lines and towers. All up much better than I expected !! Smile

Glad to hear the ground tests are positive Andrew, I was thinking later that it couldn't be the batteries which were directly causing the cut-outs because there isn't any in-built intelligence there to do it. If the batteries are overloaded, they'll continue until they burn but the ESC has the over-current protection capability to cause a shut-down. Having said that, please be aware that those batteries aren't the highest quality, nor are they new - so flog 'em to death to prove that a 4S option is a good one for your plane, and them bin them as you get some new ones!

Thanks Steve. I have just ordered 3 4S 3300mah 30C from HK. I figured I didn't need large amounts of oomph with a high C rating, just a good run time. Your batteries on the ground run lasted just under 3 mins at 3/4 to full throttle. 1/2 throttle in flight gives plenty of speed.
