Stephen's Plane Build's, Mods, Techniques etc

Maiden Today, Flys Great.
Was very Happy with the Flying,
Just remember always make sure the wings are flapping or you will fall out of the sky which i tried up high, but full power back on and it rights itself and flys again after about a couple of seconds.

Also make sure you have full rates to ailerons as you need them to turn easier, i even did a loop which the crowd enjoyed.

Fly slow and it will decend and cut power when about a foot off the ground and it looks impressive and no damage on grass at all.

Important caution
After several flights and 3 min into flying i was lucky that i was about 1 meter from the ground the whole thing shut down and belly landed in the high grass.

Speed Controller Failed, Replaced with a 35 amp speed controller and all flying again, lucky i was only so hi off the ground could have been foam pieces if i was up high.

Images attached of current Draw of bird at Full Throttle and burnt out Speed Controller.
Suggest owners Change Speed Controller as its a brick when not Flapping happily in the air

I Think Cris Mc Got Some Video Footage Biggrin

Hotliner repairs,

FLASH T FULL COMPOSITE HOTLINER IMPORTED FROM USA

After smoking out the Hot liner last visit due to running 5s lipo instead of the 4s lipo, i needed a replacement for my ber Expensive Hacker Motor.
I tried Turnigy edf 1900kv 3659 that ive had for long time, but That motor had a crazy vibration resonating on test flight so full throttle would have been devasting.
I really Think The edf 3659 1900kv Motor would have been the perfect Subsitute with higher kv,  higher 15x10 prop, 4-5 s lipo. Only if it wasn't for the vibration it had coming from it (out of balance bad)
So i Ordered an alternative Sk3 GliderDrive 3858 1120kv, this motor spins smooth as.

Hotliner is Spinning a 13x8 carbon prop which static test on 4s was 80Amps 1000watts approx with this new Motor Installed
This Motor is Rated at 58 amps, 860 watts so i guess i have to be throttle easy when i fly, Otherwise i Could change the prop to a 12x8 carbon that i Have but i try the 13x 8 First.  Biggrin

Will see how it goes this weekend, to see if i go back to the original plan or go forward with this setup.

Was Down Today, It Flew well But not Fast as i would like, 4s lipo
I made some mod to fit a 5s lipo This afternoon, so id like to give that a go.
Kieran Mentioned, probably best to swap out the 13x8 prop with a higher pitch prop, so i'm looking at getting a 12 x10 or 13x10 possibly
I may get down Tommorow if my sunday plans change for an hour or so, as id like to give a test flight and also dust off the Nemesis and get that in the air again as well.

Sunday flight test of the Flash T carbon Hotliner on 5s was a treat
A lot faster and a bigger smile. Motor came down warm not hot at all.
Ordered a 13x10 prop, 14x10 and 15x10 prop so i can do some testing to find the best suited prop.
Well have to fit my pitot tube for actual air speed next time.
Also Time to give the Hotliner some Decals

Current set up is -
sk3 gliderdrive motor 1120 kv
Turnigy kforce 100amp burst 150 amp esc speed controller
Folding carbon prop 13 x 8
Lipo 5s graphene 2200ma
crow feet brake mix setup, to wash out speed for landing

Some Home made decals added To Hotliner using the old school method of clear adheasive label paper and gloss clear coat on top of ink, but you can use any clear spray coat as pictured.

After a Maiden Last weekend on 5s lipo, i ended up frying my Esc , Now with a New Esc Installed 100 amp Turnigy Plush with all the heat shrink removed and cable Tie heat sink on.
I have Tested the Set up using now a 13x10 Prop on 4s lipo and i'm just over the 105 Amp on Static Thrust.

So i would assume that on 5s last weekend i would of been pushing possibly up to 150 amps with the slightly more Torque Prop being used as well.

Good to Hear from you, Hope you been looking after yourself. Thxs For The Nice Comments

Yes its been a while since i have  tinkered with rc stuff. Been so busy with life in general and work always gets in the way, but i'm trying to get back into rc, not full on as we were years ago but at least try and get down and socialise and  have some fun and tinker build etc. eg Meteor build has been fun and still not Finished.

Kieran been trying to get me into Fpv Flying so tonight i Finally found my fpv bits and pieces box and put together a fpv setup for my Syryker Q so Thats going to be Interesting Flight.  Biggrin

Maybe will see you down the Field one Day and Catch Up, I Think theres a BBq Day Coming up soon.

Remember the powerlines are hard to see with FPV
Ask me how I know

Woohoo, I Fpv with The Stryker Today only Did a  few laps with baz there as a spotter,  keeping my flight circuit tight.
I'm  told my Camera lens view needs to be wider degree which i'm working on at the moment digging up all my old cameras off the quad stuff i got to find a good wide view lens.  Smile
Its a lot of Practice i can see, but i try and keep at it.

EDIT
So i Tried about 5 that i had from old cameras etc and found one that was 140 Degree, I think the one i had on was 90 degree,  as there a huge difference in viwing field.

Great turbines with outstanding performance and build quality at a very affordable price. They’re supposed to be bringing a smaller 4.5kg version to market, but it’s release has been delayed due to their being swamped with orders for their largest 30kg units. They’re also said to be working on two even larger units.

My Customed Glassed Rc Stryker F27 90mm Edf,    Edf Repacement

This is The Link For the Build of Stryker Edf approx 6 Years Ago

http://forum.rcflyingclub.com/showthread.php?tid=88&pid=19558#pid19558

When a Esc Speed Controller Fails badly they normally dont like Edfs and Full Throttle Input whilst Flying, Though there is also the Other possibility the Edf sucked something through the Edf at Full Throttle.

Interesting Fact This Edf Had Over 100 Flights pushing 7 Plus Hours of Run Time

So i Have Decided To Upgrade the Esc Speed Controller to 150 amp Turnigy Plush with Auto Timing Feature.
The Auto Timing Feature is Brilliant for Edfs as gives the Edf the Advance Timing for all throttle Postions, Which in turns give the Edf They smooth quiet Sound not winning.
Turnigy Plush has 0`  6`  12`  18` 24` 30`  Auto
Test showed Running at 18` Motor sounded Rough at half throttle but max output was 108 Amps
Test 30` motor sounded Rough at half Throttle but Maxed out at 128 Amps
Auto Setting Run Smooth at Half Throttle and Maxed Out at 128 Amps
Running 6s 3000Ma Graphene Lipo
Note Full Throttles are only 3-5 Second Bursts and No More as motor Rating is Only 80Amps Max.
Running 5s Lipo, Then Its Closer to The motor Standard Spec

Using The Turnigy Plush Auto There is Also No Need To adjust the PWM Setting (Timing) And Doing The Calc

EG. 1850Kv Motor x 24Volt Lipo X  12 pole Motor = 532800 / 20 =  26640  (27khz)

Another Tip Is to Always Keep the Battery Wires Short from the Esc Speed Controller, The Motor Esc wires can Be as Long as Needed as there going to motor windings anyway.
I either leave the length of Esc Battery Wire as How it came or shorten if a can an inch or two. Thus to Prevent an Inductance Issue.

New Edf Parts
12 Blade High-Performance 90mm EDF Ducted Fan Unit
Warhead 3545-1850KV EDF Motor 90mm
Turnigy Plush-32 150A Speed Controller w/BEC | HobbyKing

Balnce the Edf to Centre , IUse a Simple Trick of a Pen Lid over the shaft and then Tighten The Screws, Perfect Center.

Then Test the Balance of Edf Blade and add weight etc till it runs smooth. I Found My edf Blade was Preety good from Get go, so i did not Need any additional Balancing.
If Adding weight , i Normally do it Inside the Nose Cone at One Point and then adjust (Turn It every 5mm till i get a smooth sound balanced Fan)
Tiniest amout of weight can make a huge Difference, so Start of Tiny Weight, Just a Dap of Epoxy
You Can get a phone App for sound metering To be More Accurate as Well
REMEMBER CAUTION WHEN TESTING EDFS AS THEY CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS, I DO MY LIVE RUNNING OF EDF FROM ANOTHER ROOM USING MY TX TO TURN THROTTLE
UP AND DOWN SO IF IT FAILS IM NOT WEARING THE FLYING PARTS IN THE SAME ROOM IF EDF FAILS
THERE IS MANY SAFETY VIDEO CLIPS ON TESTING EDFS ON YOUTUBE, I FIND BEING IN ANOTHER ROOM WATCHING THROUGH A WINDOW THE SAFEST, WITH THE EDF FACING AWAY FROM ME.

My new Edf 90mm Changesun the wires came from the right top rather than the left Bottom Hence the exposed  Motor Wires on Top rather than Underneath.
(I could have cut the Edf motor Mount to run the wires The origninal way but did not want to compromise the strength of EDf at Motor Mount)

Ready for Action Again, Though I'm Thinking of adding an additional  Heat Sink To The Esc.

Do you think resurrecting the Willows Cup would be a good idea?

Gravity sucks, or should I say, is the downfall of all things flying. It's the way it's controlled that makes the end memorable or not.

Wow i Forgot about the Willows Cup.
I Still Have the Trophy for the Willows Cup, which was Engraved  " The Unnamed Cup" just dug it out of the cupboard.
The Trophy was named That so it could be used for other events as well, and given to the winner and passed on etc
It needs some silver polish to bring its Glory back.

Rare Bears are hard and expensive to get i think now adays
