Skyartec Skyfun Thread
#61

Heh Gary been Thinking of Resurrecting the Funjet Myself

Here is a Good Prop lipo Setup

Pitch Speed 265.7 km/h 48 Amps 4s Lipo 4.1x4.1 Prop good flight time

Its A great Current Draw Not Excessive, But If You want Speed Change Prop To 4.75x5.5 and you got 315.8 km/h Amps go up to 68 amps shorter Flight Time.

Pitch Speed, Amps on Right Column Halfway Down (download Picture for better Viewing if need too.?)

Now that sounds like a plan Steve
My construction is progressing nicely.
Striped all the decals, sanded the airframe and just this afternoon finnished epoxying the whole thing together. Ive retapped the engine mount up a size and fitted a carbon fibre plate under the fusalage and through bolted the whole thing.
Ive made new ailerons from balsa and am about to give them and the airframe a coat of ultra thin glass, it is majic stuff.
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...duct=10905&Product_Name=Glass_Fiber_Cloth_450x1000mm_18g/m2_(Super_Thin)_
am using Paul Js Cabots waterbased urathane as a glassing medium.
I am running a high power 85amp speedy. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...duct=10331&Product_Name=Turnigy__Brushless_ESC_85A_w/_5A_SBEC
it is 30 grams lighter than the 80 amp plush so that should be the ducks guts.
I will be running 4S 2650 40C Turnigy batteries from my Alpha (weight 315 grams). Do you think the 4.75 x 5.5 prop will do. Or do you think I could go a little bigger?

i probably shouldn't Glassed mine But Mine Was already in The Making Since Xmas. Yes I have resurrected my Funjet that i Started ages ago but then Got The Stryker Up Instead so i Stored it up in the roof.

It was Glued Together and Top half Painted.

Heres Some Pictures of Its Progress Since it was pulled out of roof and Dust Taken off It.

Used 6 mm Thick balsa For Elevons and 40 mm Wide Rather than stock 30 mm Width.

Scheme For This One was easy as The only colors i had where Purple and Fluro Red, which seems to tie in with the Previously Painted Fluro Yellow.

I Have added a very thick 6 mm diameter carbon rod for Wing strength and Using The Custom RC Mount which Im Customizing To Fit as Its Designed for Stryker.
Elevons have Plastic Hinges Fitted Ready for Gluing on Finishing of Clear Coats.
Going To Put Many Coats Of The Clear Polyurethane To give It a Glossy and Firmer surface.

Hey Steve
That engine mount looks awsome.
I would take it easy on applying too many coats of urathane.
It is not very strong at all until mixed with fibreglass. Just as polyester resin is brittle and shatters easily with impact if not combined with fibreglass. I have actually made my elevons slightly smaller to reduce drag but increased the rates. Seemed logical to me to produce speed.
Can you tell me what prop adapter you are running on the 2221-8 with the master prop.
Thanks

Hi Gary,
Good to hear that the F/G is going well.
I see that you are using the finer weave cloth than I use,
I'll be interested to see what sort of finish you end up with.
I usually end up with about 4 coats of polyurathane by the time I'm finished
the last coat I mix with some baby talc powder then fine sand it before
painting.

Gary, thankyou for lending me some Fiber tissue.

We used a single layer of that combined with Zap.

Then a layer of Carbon Fibre combined with 30 Min epoxy.

We have ended up with a surprisingly tough nose section for my Siren, repairs are looking good!

A little more Progress with Servos Install and hatch Lid Pin front Lock and Rear Extra Strong Earth Magnet and Pull Lid Up Pin On Top.

I Have Gone For Heavy Duty 24 grams High Response servos, and Inverted to Top of Plane, Rather than Underside How it is normally Done.
(With some Consulting from The Expert Kizza)

Magnets from jaycar, i use two one glued to hatch and other to plane so when they connect its super super strong.

Hey Steve
Good to see your Funjet upgrade progressing.
I have modified my wings to run the servos on the top of the wings as well and will be running HK digital metal servos. It makes sense... don"t know why they put them under the wings in the first place.
Am now going through the time consuming and fiddley process of glassing the whole thing.( Will post some pics shortly)
Steve have you considered the Scorpion SCH2221-6. It has an even higher Kv and a much higher max current draw. Was just woundering if it would work. Im not as clued up on the motor/prop/battery and current draw calculations as you are.
If it has the torque the thing would be absolutley balistic.

Scorpion SCH2221-6 if Not a bad Motor Too
4.1x 4.1 max prop on 4s i Think to give the same torque level and Thrust level and high speed 306km/h
I'm no Expert but Ive been using figures from my setup with the 2221-8
Knowing with many Flights with this setup too as my basis for choosing different motors,(trying to keep to or above these figures i assume the setup will be OK and hopefully not lacking.

2221-8 Figures
Torque 159. and static Thrust 1442. Has nice thrust ratio for takeoffs and verticals
And of course Trying to keep amps down as much as i can in the process.

Hello fellow Skyfun pilots
Just picking all your brains again (Kiran,Kev,Steve) can anyone give me a good C of G measurement from the tip of the nose for the Skyfun. The manual says it should be slighly forward of the hand hold grips for launching, but that sounds way to inaccurate to give you any confidence in setting it up for good stable flight as well as nice balanced floating landings.

Just about in front of the finger holes is fine, the plane is not really CofG sensitive. You'll find that you can basically dial in the amount of desired "floatiness" by bringing the battery back. You have to be really nasty with what your doing to provoke any unstable characteristics and any that you do encounter are fixed by a burst of full throttle to punch out.

I have flown the plane with the battery stupidly far back and it was fine.

agreed.

i have flown with 3s 1800mah all the way to 4s 4000mah.. lol

its gotta be the most forgiving c of g going round Smile

Hey Kev
Youve got a DX6i
What do you plug your servos into on the receiver? Do I need a Y harness or is it programmed in the radio? And how do you set up the elevon mix?
I havent put my radio gear in yet. Im still finishing off the glass work on the fusalage. Just wanted to know to save me a lot of mucking around when I install it.

Wing type= Delta in your radio, servo's plug straight into ELE & AIL. If you just can't seem to get it working right with reversing etc, swap ports!

Hello all
Who and what is OMP.
By the way Steve, did you know that you need a licence for space flight, that motor looks big enough to launch the space shuttle... if you bolted that sucker onto Pauls SS Columbia I dont think we would ever see it again.. it would be in orbit for ever.

Hope im there Sunday to see the fireworks..... Should be "fully sick bro".
Your paint job looks outstanding.
My transmitter died and is away for repairs... so no flying for me this weekend.... sob...sob. (Scroll wheel died so I can't select any aircraft)
My funjet glass work is finally finished, but my paint job is going to take a while because of the multi colour paint job im doing. but it will all be worth it (I hope).
