Thanks for the great Video Jason.
They are a personal favorite of mine too.
I just missed out on a P38 last week in RC Trader. The guy sold it 5 minutes before I rang him.... Spewing..... It was still in the box, had a composite airframe designed to run twin 50 cc gassers with a 2.4meter wing span. Unfortunatley the company that was making them stopped in 2008. Will have to keep looking.

I think I saw someone selling something similar during my searches last night!!
Was meant to be running the same size gas engine. I admit I was drooling, but thought against it for now. Need to learn how to actually fly first!
I'll keep an eye out Gaz as well. Between those and Corsairs I'm a very happy person!

What a shame Gazz, that would have been an exquisite machine!!
Does any one els make a big one suitable for electric conversion I wonder.

No worries.
I've spoken to the original guy I posted about to get some ideas. Am thinking of getting one of their nice foamies with a camera set up in it.
What are your opinions on their carbon crashproofing? Do you think there are merits to it?
From what I gather they create a carbon shell around the vital parts

Crashproofing......hahahaha..haaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Sorry mate there is no such thing.
However there are a number of processes around that certainly improve a models ability to ....take an impact. It certainly has merit and will protect minor bingles, but nothing is crash proof.
If you find a plane that the manufacturer says is crash proof. Bring it down to the field and I will show you just how wrong they are.
Hell...... Im a nice bloke, I'll even help you pick up all the pieces.

I would never have believe crash proof, was more thinking crash resistant...
They did admit you don't want to crash nose first into the ground. hell they showed him crashing a very nice mosquito, and it did destroy a wing!
Just want it to be able to take some hits without needing to rebuild it each and every time. Every 2nd time I can handle!

Here's one right here in Australia $296 +$30 for postage

Looks like it's the same machine

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/P38-Lightning...d_Vehicles&hash=item27bd5d5dd5

It's a big bird and at 2.2m Span with a weight of 5500g it's looks like it will have a reasonable wing loading too. Should be a very nice flyer!!

Nice work Jason!!
How easy do you reckon it would be to mount electrics in that?
It should be an awesome flyer!

I wonder if there is enough room in the fuse for 2 x 10S batteries, because thats what it will need.

OK well here comes one of my learning lessons....
How easy/hard would it be to convert that balsa model to have retracts?

I have the J-power/Hobby king P-38. Retracts are crap. I changed them to Servoless with modifications to fit them. works well.
Not a speed machine but flies scale and looks nice. I'll bring it down on Sunday if the weather and the field allows it.

Apparently the one that I was looking at is a newer version than the one on hk.
I will certainly be down there to have a look.
How hard were the retracts to replace George? I had read that, and it was turning me off that model, but love the P-38, such an awesome majestic plane!

I had to make plywood mounts to screw in the servoless retracts. Not hard just very fiddly and takes a bit of stuffing around as you also have the doors to allow them to close. Once you learn how to fly first, the P-38 could be a first warbird, it's is an easy flyer for a twin motor plane.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, just slowly planning a few of my next projects.
I'm keen to get the apprentice up and flying around!
Then can slowly work on the warbird hanger.....
Hey George, how does your B-25 fly?

should be no probs
I reckon two Hacker A 50s run of 6S would haul it round the sky OK. those nacelles look pretty roomy
since one Hacker 50 makes a 3Kg airframe go like a cat with a fire cracker up it's ............
The P38 only weighs 5.5 Kgs and would have two Hackers !!

It should also take the extra weight of retracts with out any trouble at all
