The Sundowner that's legal for EF1 is this one from Hanger 9 It the "Sundowner 36 ARF"
It needs to have the right motor in it too below that is a list of approved motors

I think your right, The simpler it is, the easier it is to enjoy it and it can still be very competitive especially in FFC. I guess the other classes do offer different things that's why there are the other classes. It is all great fun tho' and that's main thing !!
F3D is a really demanding class the engines are finicky and very specialised but they put out heaps of herb and they go quick!!
