F16 Remodel
#1

Hi everyone.
In order to prepare myself for the F14 Tomcat build I need to try out
some techniques.
For this I'm going to remodel my F16 pusher prop jet which is badly in need of some TLC.

Things I intend to do.
Using Model Mate superlight filler replace missing foam, fill any imperfections and
generally clean up model.
Sand model to a smooth finish.
Fibreglass entire model.
Repaint in a new colour scheme(still to be decided).
Upgrade motor from small brushless with gearbox to a direct drive brushless.

I am starting today so this thread should be updated each couple of days.

Paul

Keep in mind your weights when fibre glassing, also was the model hard to balance before? how will it balance with the new setup? You could cheat if you need more weight somewhere by beefing up the layering. Have to keep an eye on the wingloading though. Looks like it will go well.

Yep I hear you.
I've gone for a very light weight cloth but I'll be mindful of the
weight of finished model.
Not using 2 part resin to fibreglass just water based polyurthane.(light coats).
When you consider the amount of fibre tape and plastic decals that I've removed already
I've got a bit of extra weight to play with. Must have had nearly half a roll of tape on the broken nose. Smile
Should be an interesting remodel.

After many hours of filling and sanding think she is ready for some
fibreglass.

Found out today that water based polyurathane is great to give your model
a nice glossy finish, but is a bugger to sand off if you ever decide to
change colour schemes. Smile
Also this F16 only has depron elevons the rest of the model is similar to
the parkzone T28 or mustang. Definately easier to sand depron than this
other foam and you have to be careful not to accidently take chunks of foam
off when you are using the coarse sandpaper.
As it looks like we are not going to get much flying in this weekend I'll start
the fibreglassing tomorrow.

Fibreglassing almost finished.
It certainly seems to have added a bit of strength to the airframe
and weight is ok.
I reckon it would be much easier to F/G the individual parts rather than
attempting to do it after assembly.
Just have to put finishing coat of WBPU and talcum powder on then she should be ready for painting.
Bit hard to see any difference by photograph at the moment but will post
one when finishing coat is on.

No new photos yet but fibreglassing all finished.
Weighed the plane today including electrics, motor and battery and she is about 150grms
heavier than what the instruction guide that came with the plane states.
Now this is using a much more powerful motor and bigger battery than original so it's not
simply saying that this is all F/G.
I still have to paint the model but going on my other models that will not add much more
weight. As it is already fibreglassed I should not have to put 4 coats of polyurathane on
top. I'm guessing just 1 coat over the paint to seal in the colour.
I intend to paint it tomorrow so will have a better idea then.

It sounds like its going well and that isn't much weight overall added to plane with benefit of strength now to frame.

Ok guys here she is.
Still needs a few things done,
eg. power plant installed,
Decals to be applied,
Some cockpit detailing.

I've based the colour scheme on the USAF 18th Aggressor Squadron based in Alaska.

Now this model has had some hard knocks and been broken in a few places so the overall finish
is not as good as I had hoped.
However the idea was to brush up on some techniques needed to build the F14 Tomcat and I'm pleased
with what I have learned.

Here is the real thing.

For Rob here is the polyurathane I use.

Paul,

That is looking fantastic! I'm keen to see you fly it.
The arrow seems like an excellent idea! All that grey and whit is going to disappear on a day like today.

Rebuilt F16 successfully maidened today.
Darren put her through her paces and she
looked good. Smile
Just have to make a small adjustment to elevons
which are a little loose and let Darren test her again.
Looking good and I'm very happy. Biggrin
