Thermal Gliders
#1

Watching Cris with he's non Powered Glider got me thinking about a new Challenge and some Old School Stuff which may be a lot of fun And Maybe Might Inspire some Fun Contests of who can stay up the longest launching at the the same time in the same conditions

Was Looking At Buying one of these to throw around around around like a Discus.

Always wanted to get a glider but dont you need thermals to keep this up? I've seen these off a cliff up near palm beach and the guys sit back in an armchair flying their plane..

Looking at getting a DLG at the moment, There are plenty of thermals around PRCAC on a sunny day, the challenge is to find them.

I have my eye on one of these:

I had plans for making one, but i dont think the balsa construction would hold up to the discus throw action, i'll need to do several arm curls to build up my biceps of i were to toss it javelin sytle.
Can you bungee at PRAC, only ever seen it done but wouldn't have a clue how and what space is needed.

That looks very similar though its wing span is 2.0 m rather than the one i was looking at at 1.5 m which would be better for seeing at a high altitude.
A lot dearer too.
Was wondering how this cheaper version would go, what's your thoughts ?

yeh theres enough room for bungee setup at Field just depends on how high you want to shoot it up i guess to the length of cord i think.

Probably cheaper to get these imported from Asia.

The issue with the HK DLG is no rudder, You definitely want a rudder if you are thermal-ling.

Hotliner looked good until I saw that the wings are not fibreglass as well Frown

Gday KV

I too saw the HK hotliner and my thoughts were the same, however, a quick lesson from Paul J on the art of fibreglassing could do the trick.

In regards to the bungee launch queries Dave Gazz and myself enjoyed watching Chris M have a punt at this last sunday. Initial efforts looked promising and I am sure Chris will have this down pat very soon. If anyone is game I would be happy to offer my services with my uber cub for aerotow duties.

I would not exactly call this a thermal glider but my new hanger aquasition is definately hot.
All carbon fibre that only weighs 550 grams.

Gazz, that looks tops. 550g is amazing for a plane that size. No doubt super strong where it needs to be. I know it's missing its internals but I would love to check it out.

Every other aircraft you have is going to be boring after you get this one in the air. Looks magic!
