Lessons in CG
#1

No need for me to say anything other than "I learnt a lot about CG yesterday and how to not trust the manual"

FrSky Q X7 Mode 2, Turnigy 9XR Pro and Evolution. Multirotors, planes plus a couple of heli's. Too many to list.

Aaaaand if the wife is reading this: "The club made me buy these planes, I had no part in it, honestly!"

They certainly are hard to fly when the C of G is too far back

“The knack of flying is learning how to throw your machine at the ground and miss.”

Cog can cause havoc, hey in the video it appears to torque roll a bit to left when you gave it power which wont help in control
Curious how was you aileron and elevator movement / centering and where you giving a lot of down or up elevator to compensate for cog ?.

To be honest Steve, I don't remember. It was all a blur. Basically yes, it did torque to the left to start with. My thoughts were that it took off too quickly due to the excessive tail weight. Because I then throttled up to get it moving, it then torqued left. I then tried to counteract with right rudder and aileron, but there was no response and it was headed straight for the factory roof.

You're right, when it throttles up there's a huge torque to the left. I suspect that the tail heaviness combined with the natural torque of a big 4-bladed prop just made it too difficult to counteract the pull to the left.

I can't remember what I did after that - it was flying with a mind of its own as you can probably see. I think I probably deliberately steered it to the left when it became apparent that it was headed for the factory.

Everyone who's seen the video has said that it shows classic signs of tail heaviness. I just wish I picked it up at the time :-)

The worst version of that is when you use the recommended gear, and confirm the c of g is at the factory specified position and it does that... Thanks Eflite.

Signature overload. That list just got ridiculous. However, Funcubs are .... fun.
