Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - SteadyEddy - 12-05-2012

I tried ringing HobbyKing in Carringbah ... phone dead. I went for a drive to their shop and it was just an empty shell.
Just wondering if anyone in the club knows anything about them moving or shutting down.

Nope - not heard a thing about that. I'd hope that they simply went to larger premises!

C'mon KV

Chuck a good 7 year business plan in front of me and I'll pony up the dough!
You could run a business like that easy as, with some good mentoring you would then have the skills to kick it up a notch.

Cheers

That's a classic !!!! I think if you can squeeze smoke or flame into the business name you've got to be on a winner !!

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - kizza42 - 13-05-2012

The only way I can see a Hobbyshop being mildly successful these days:

-Stock everything
-Charge next to nothing

The secret ingredients is to be open 24hr and easy to get to (Which is why I reckon Auburn is ideal, central location, lots of industrial size units that are vacant)

Basically a MSY of the Hobbyworld (Coincidentally MSY first opened in Auburn)

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - ConcreteTurtle - 14-05-2012

I'll work there, we can get paid in planes and speedys, right?

Maybe we can skip the whole MSY, dept. of fair trading step though...

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - Skidz - 14-05-2012

Greetings from Frankfurt. Waiting for a plane home.

My two bobs worth, I think the owners want to escape. They compete with HK directly plus the southcoast warehouse. It would be high cash outlay for stock with neglible profit with hundreds of phone calls from customers bitchin about their purchases from the aforementioned. I suspect the deal done with H-Store might have been a bit constraining leading to a bit of a hospital pass.

Cautious Investor

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - Too Drunk to Fly - 14-05-2012

My family is in the importing business, and I reckon Dave H has got it right, especially the 'competing with southcoast warehouse' bit. Nearly all their business would be online, with hardly any business going through the actual shop.
..but then if Modelflight was for sale, that's a different story, even I would be looking for the cash Regular_smile

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - robair - 14-05-2012

I thought the HK store WAS also the HK warehouse.
Well that is just insane if the shopfront is competing with HK's warehouse? Who'd be dumb enough to sign up for that??

Having said that a local HK business could be a success if the usual retail model was completely turfed out the door.
I suggest a brewery on the side, in true HK fashion bottles would be unlabelled, each would be o so slightly different and the tops unopenable without industrial sized removal tools. Each bottle would have a small esc floating around inside that has been ultra professionally fried by samste to add flavour. God knows you need a beer or three to build anything from HK and retain your sanity! Gazz would naturally provide his unique funky brand of in your face, factually correct, politically incorrect customer service. KV would of course be lurking in the shadows ready to mete out some intense positional asphyxsia to anyone who dares complain about anything.

Cheers

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - SteadyEddy - 14-05-2012

C'mon blokes, where's some optimism. Why put a HK shop in Auburn ?.

I reckon they should setup a HK store in Seven Hills, cheaper rent, central to most rC clubs in sydney ... lots of industrial units behind our field. Just crash and walk to the shop and buy a new plane or part... sooo simple.

When I win Lotto I'll have to think about it. Lol

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - gbanger - 14-05-2012

There would be absolutely no question about it.
If I won lotto or some impossiblly rediculous government money laundering scheme designed specifically to make the average looser believe they actually have a faintest chance in hell of winning a booby prize......

I would set up the biggest hobby shop on the friggen planet,
It would cover the area of a small airfield

The shop would NEVER be out of stock of anything,
but you have to come and pick your own shit up, that way I could cash in with my .... YOU CANT COME HERE WITHOUT SPENDING THOUSANDS scheme

1st
I would have an indoor lake, 100m x 50m but only 600mmm deep, so all the power boat junkies had room to race .
I would have the west wall lined with 3 phase adjustable high power fans so the RC yacht guys could race till their keels fell off.

2nd
I would build the worlds most fully sick RC 4WD buggy course, complete with hill climbs and creek crossings.
Around the outside of that I would have a micro smooth asphalt road race course for the RC road race nuts.

Finally......
I would build the biggest indoor RC airplane arena on the planet, with a runway 300m long as smooth as glass with a roof 300 meters high with enough room to fly almost out of site in both directions.

Getting in the front door would of course be a small cover charge
Rofl

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - wingtipper - 14-05-2012

GAZ . IF YOU SOLD COFFEE AND BEER AS WELL . I would live there as a homeless hobby junkie .

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - gbanger - 15-05-2012

BEER goes without saying Frank, but not while flying.
You would also have the manditory daily BBQ to raise funds for..... um...... well......err...... me!

Can we start sketching the plans for this RC Universe/dream world.
You know some rich business man with lots of money might just listen to your idea. We should approch Richard Branson. Virgin Mega hobby land. he might give us his Island to use....

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - gbanger - 15-05-2012

Now your thinkin George!

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - samste - 15-05-2012

Add a Casino to the Hobby world and i know the perfect person who would more than happy build the sucker for Us. As he hasn't nailed the market in Sydney Yet but hes got perth, melbourne and overseas all setup, and he was on tv just recently talking about Sydney

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - robair - 15-05-2012

Gday All

Why not approach Craig Thomson? he seems to have plenty of spare cash and a reliable income stream with zero financial controls?
Branson would ask too many questions....
The only problem that I can see is that Super Gazzmatazz Hobby World would also need to have a brothel attached. This does not really suit our family friendly hobby.

"Where are you going dear?"
"To the hobby shop darling"
"Again?? That is 4 times this week already?"

Cheers

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - Flying fisho - 15-05-2012

If we are manifesting a one stop shop for all, we need food & drink with style. Perhaps a hooters bistro in the casino?

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - SteadyEddy - 15-05-2012

Ahhh bugga! ... lets go all the way and get all the "clowns" in Canberra's Parliament to join in ... it'll be the greatest show on Earth !!.
We might even get "the clowns" to land their private jets on our airfield and we can make our own Tax on them . 100% GFN Tax ( Good For Nothing Tax) ... how good would that be . Lol .

RE: Anyone know what happened to HobbyKing store in Carringbah? - Too Drunk to Fly - 15-05-2012

I like boobs and I like beer....

BTW, if only Craig Thomson had cash, we know he's got credit cards!

Can we sell telescopes too Smile I like telescopes....(anything astronomy)
maybe an upstairs observatory.... (women under 30 free admission, bosslady turned 30 last year so probably exclude her.... Wink)
