Flying Stick WTB - Doish - 26-04-2023

Hi all,

Been looking for one of these flying sticks for some time and note a few in the club have them. I was keen to build one though between work and family finding hard to find the time.

Should anyone look to sell theirs in the future please can you let me know as very interested.

Thank you

I've been tempted to build one too. I have motors and batteries already. ESC and servos arriving from AliExpress in the next few days hopefully.

I haven't got a covering iron so I'll have to try out my clothes iron to see if it makes covering film stick properly Smile

Hi Liam

Yes a clothes iron is fine, its what I used many years ago before I got a mini iron. Just give it a good clean when your finished as you may end up with colour on your shirts.

Good advice! Thanks

Hi Liam happy to lend you my covering iron when at the club next. I too have all motor and servos just need time, plans and the carbon rod.

The guys at the club meant me a template though was middle of Covid so had no time to complete.
Ideally someone sells the wing kit I can make up from another plane which will suit. Perhaps easier with laser cut balsa as last plane I attempted was the Aries Glider when that was a new release

Thank you. I'm a long way off needing it yet but I'll keep that in mind.

I have a 10 pack of 500mm long 5mm carbon tubes on their way from AliExpress too. As cheap as 1 tube from a hobby shop here. What size were you after?

SSL or Caffeine or anyone,

Starting to buy parts to make the plane in the picture above or a variation of this.

Question is is the carbon rod better than wooden or not as noticed there are both at the field?
If wood what type do you recommend?

Also what is the dimension of the rod in these both cube size and Length?

RE: Flying Stick WTB - caffeine - 10-05-2023

I think a square tube/rod can be easier to align and attach to. The dimensions depend on the overall size you're planning on building.

A good search term would be 'slow stick' with lots of applicable results such as this one: https://www.flitetest.com/articles/slow-stick-scratch-build

If you're just looking for a cheap plane to get back into it, you might consider a Kmart foam glider conversion. You can have a full rudder, aileron, elevator plane ready to fly for around $50. Add your receiver of choice and you're up and running.

It's also extremely robust, and easy to repair if you crash it. The foam responds really well to hot glue so you can stick it back together in minutes.

Thanks mate. All good as have a few planes was just looking at those stick made sticks at the club and was asking on the off chance.

Those Kmart foamies could make a good winter project too
