Skyartec Skyfun Thread
#1

hey considering the fact that alot of skyfun's were bought i thought perhaps a thread could be useful for building and modifying techniques..

i started mine tonight and took some pics, ( warning.. hk 5 min expoxy is fast! 4-6 is all you get to have it set)

i decided after reading some bad reviews that id remove motor mount and reglue, you can see in third photo that glue is not consistent across the entire underside of mount plate
[Image: 27092009102.jpg]
It really didnt take much to take the plate off, as i applied pressure it sort of flexed and then "pop" , i reckon in a high G outside loop or something she could come right off in flight!

glued first side by wing first then added vert fin.. not sure this is best method had some trouble with vert fin after first joint overglue had dried, 30 min epoxy prolly would have eliminated this problem..

I did the secon side all in one go cause i was worried about not having enough epoxy left, this would have been easier if i had 3 hands, nevertheless it got done.

adding some fibreglass spars 2morrow.. getting late.

guys feel free to add pics of things done differently and what not cause im just going for it and will like the info.. Biggrin

Hi All

I'm not an Expert in the Funjet Build but I do know some main things you may need to be aware of or Address.

1. Re Glue Mounting bracket.

# If you wish, Support mounting bracket with a plate or large washer on the underside of plane
by replacing one of the existing bolts that thread to alloy mount with a longer one that will
make to the underside.( Help in rear hard landings as well)

2. Servo mounting.

# Using the stock skyartec servos there is no issues only glue servo mount.

# Using other servos, You need to check the height of servo sitting in mount.
As you may find that servo arm will hit the top of the servo protecting covers when installed.
If this happens you may need to recess the servo mounts lower into the servo mount holes of the
plane.

3. Canopy Mount and Canopy lid.
# Re glue Canopy lid, you can spray inside of Plastic canopy lid to get the black look if preferred.

# Don't rely on button fix to hold Canopy down as it will come off in flight i Know first hand.
# use alternate methods Magnets, Velcro Etc
# I have used a pen lid pushed into the front of plane and then the cut bit of pen body and fixed to canopy front to slide into pen lid for front of canopy to lack down. The back of canopy is Velcro down.

4. Center of Gravity

# This is where you put your two fingers in the underside and check to make sure you are 10-20 %
front heavy.
This will help in Battery positioning. I have Run Velcro from front to back so i can adjust
battery position for different size and weight of lipo's.

5. Reinforcement of Body

# Carbon Rods along wings. (Strengthen wing span)

# Carbon plank front to center of gravity position. (For Hard Landings to prevent snap in half)

Thanks Guys,
I'm sure the other builders will appreciate your tips.
Anyone intending to paint their airframes?
If so, might be a good idea to let everyone know what colour scheme
you have in mind just incase we get duplicates.

hey thanks steve i was hoping you would chime in when i started the thread.. Biggrin

great tips, one thing im not sure of at this stage is what to use or where to get the centre skid plate from.. also i thought actual carbon was bad for radio glitches?

ill have alook around once i go pick up my pizzas in a minute but if anyone has a link to a good skid plate post it up.. Wink

Hi All

Kev i have had no dramas with tx / rx with 10mm carbon plank on the underside of the Funjet. Though i have my antenna sticking out but i don't
if it was inside it would make any difference. (For me it keeps ever thing neat inside with cables etc.

Here is some Info that you may find Interesting.

Quote:RECEIVERS ANTENNA INSTALLATION INFORMATION
IMPORTANT: Since the 2.4GHz have different characteristics than that of the conventional 27MHz and 72MHz frequencies, please read this carefully to enjoy safe flight with the 2.4GHz system.
1. Keep the antenna away from the motor, ESC, and other noise sources as much as possible.
2. Be very careful when handling the receiver antennas. Repeated motion in and out of the case, holes
or excessive pulling forces could break or compromise the internal antenna connections.
3. The antenna should be placed at a 90 degree angle to the centre AXIS of model. This is not a critical
figure, but is very important to have a good range.
4. The antenna must be kept away from conductive materials, such as metal and carbon by at least a
half inch. The coaxial part of the antennas does not need to follow these guidelines, but do not bend
it in a small radius.
5. If the fuselage is made of conductive material such as metal and carbon, the antennas part must be
placed outside of the fuselage. In addition to that , do not attach the antenna part on the fuselage.
Installing the RECEIVER into that kind of fuselage, this guideline must be kept.

The carbon plank was bought from hobby in the hills and it was about 10mm wide and about 2mm thick.
I used this because it gives extra support to underside from plane snapping, not for skid plate.

For skid plate i have just given the underside several thick coats of polyurethane clear after painting my underside.

The Funjet will fly No problems, Body strengthening is not crucial thing, this is only done to make it more robust.
The Main thing you need to be concerned about before Maiden is the other main points, Especially Center of Gravity and Control Settings Aileron / Elevator are right Biggrin

Hi Guys,

Just want to let everyone know that I've decided on the paint scheme
that I'm going to apply to my funjet.
As much as possible I'm going to re-create the NASA Space Shuttle.
This will of course be predominately a black/white scheme with the NASA logo etc.
Thought I might mention it in case we have other funjet owners thinking of painting
their planes. Wink
As I still have the Cessna in the maintenance hanger awaiting a new engine shaft the Funjet will
still be a couple of weeks before completion.

nice idea dad i think that will look good Biggrin

while we are on the topic i thought i'd also mention mine as well..

i will be going a predominantly yellow underside with red nose top (attempting flames running back off nose) back thru orange/yellow flame tips and bright blue at back of funjet on top side with blue verticals..
i dont really mind if others use these colours or anything i just want to have it out there that thats what im doin.. Biggrin

it looks like my funjet will be maidening on saturday,
i just tested the power with a "watts up" meter using the 2700kv "380L" motor , 6x4 TGS prop ,Turnigy 3S 2200mah 30c (40c burst battery) and Turnigy Plush 60 amp esc.

results: 507 watts @ 45.05 amps

ready to rock methinks Icon_twisted

(side note: with TGS 5 x 5 prop = 387 watts @ 35 amps. 380L motor rated at 40 amp continuos current)

hey guys thought i'd post some update pics of my funjet going back together, some of you may have seen me throw it into the ground and because of that i had to put more epoxy in the nose, also cracked an elevon so i have remade them in balsa(they are pretty dodgy to start with i reckon..) i have never painted anything b4 really so this was also a chance for me to experiment with techniques, for the most part i have oversprayed my way thru it and there is probably a couple of colour schemes under this but anyway im over it now so im gonna slap on some WBPU and get her back in the air.. i doubt that im going to be to critical of this paintjob at 10 + metres and 150 + kph....
it is abit plane tho so im going to wack some sort of stickers on it.. im thinking a decipticon sticker from the "Transformers" series.. anyway see you at the basin soon Icon_twisted
