How to make an Edf or Prop Planes Quieter

How to make an Edf or Prop Planes Quieter

The More blades on an Edf is a step closer to a quieter Edf
EG , 3 blade Edf Will be Louder than a 5 Blade Edf
Here is a Clip showing the Difference between a 5 Blade Edf and a 10 Blade Edf

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qvWGDk1htjw

If you are looking at a Edf to be quiet look to buy an edf with more Blades, a 7 blade edf balanced is quiet and powerful.
Changesun do 10 Blade Units which are quiet and do hae a nice sound similar to Turbines.
Keep in Mind with more blades on an Edf the kv of the Motor will need to be Reduced .

EG , 5 blade edf with a 4000kv motor may draw 50 amps changing the unit to a 10 blade will increase it to 70 plus amps.

A Balanced Edf is the most Important Thing as a well balanced Edf will have minimal vibration which will reduce noise by a huge amount.
An unbalanced Edf will sound likes it crying for help while a balanced Edf will have a Smooth Sound.

Balancing a Edf is Similar to Balancing a Prop Blade heres a clip on Balancing a Edf that may help

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iath3xkDiqI&feature=player_embedded

here is a thread with some Info and Pics

Balancing a Prop Blade is Similar, here is one of many Propellor balancing that may help you, you can do a basic balance making both sides level or go in depth and
rim balance for a perfect balanced blade.

A balanced Blade is very important when you have a high kv/rpm pushing it you will notice more noise and vibration of a unblanced prop in a high kv /rpm setup compared to a low kv/rpm setup.

http://youtu.be/N02NHYrpA0g

http://youtu.be/1JuSujZ_pFw

Reducing noise of a Pusher Prop can be done by reduing the Kv of the motor and increasing the prop size.

Eg
2200kv motor pushing a 6x6 prop which is a Stryker Q setup can have its noise reduced by reducing the kv down to 1450kv and a 8x6 prop or can be reduced by reducing the kv down to 1800kv with a 7x6 prop
Thrust will be increased and noise will be reduced, you may lose a little top speed of the original setup.

Other Things To look at are -
Motor mounts are Secure, Different Props Too can be Noisy, and Cowling can be noisy if not secure.

With a pusher if the prop blade passes close to the trailing edge of the wing like it does on a skyfun jet, Then that creates a lot of noise. keep the prop out in clear air and that will reduce noise dramitically

Iphone and Android have vibration Apps that can be used to Balance Edfs and Props.

I Always had a Noisy A-10 with one edf Vibrating like crazy Now there both a little smoother as Manually balanced both Edfs and fitted the Vibration sensor to see how it is to fine Tune but i left it as is as its not bad now.

The Idea behind this App is to mark the blade and test it in is position on the shaft then remove the blade and reposition it on the shaft in a different position and test and see it it improves or worsens and so on to you get the best position.

A lot of People are having great success with this as you can balance it out for full throttle and half throttle with the sensor for optimum performance.

There's a fair bit of info on this technique here ...

That's great advice Steve.
I'll add the point that if your prop or fan is not correctly balanced the vibration will, over time, cause potentially terminal damage.
Firewalls and mounts will cop a beating as will motor bearings.
Now I fly helis I've become a lot more pedantic about balancing, if the main and tail blades aren't spot on bad things are inevitable
Additionally with the Viper very close to maiden your videos on fan balancing are both excellent and timely, thanks for posting them.
Now when's Gazz's next build vid coming out, they're tops too?

Cheers

Thanks Rob,

Yes my Viper is getting closer to completion electrics rx to do, elevator control, battery compartment placement to do and screw underside panels back together, but like usual playing around with other Stuff, so it sits there waiting.

Heh when will we see you Down the Field again i think youll need to bring down your Photo Id as i don't think many will remember you including me Biggrin

I remember when i first bought the A-10 and the thing was as noisy and One Edf was vibrating like Crazy on half Throttle.

Well i Gave the A-10 a Run Today as i haven't Flown it since Area 51.

With the Edfs Balanced by the Android App, I Took Off.
Well i was Waiting and waiting but there there was no Noise it was Quiet as a Mouse, Was Not Use To That.
The Sound that Came out of the Edfs was Amazing it worked Well and the Edf Ran Very smooth on all Throttle Ranges.

Steve

Looks Like i'm Going to have to Pull Out the Viper Edf and do the Same, More Work to The Viper.

Prop Slot Noise, This is very Interesting Stuff and Going to give this a go with the Stryker Q, Even though stock Stryker Q is under 80db, and with my custom lower kv motor prop configuration makes it quieter again. It still has that distinct sound.

And here is a clip and Pictures of a guy cutting out curves in zig zag and testing its noise difference with pieces on or pieces off.

Good post Samste !!
Interesting stuff indeed

Potting the windings of the motor will take a little more noise off too
and having a nice prop like a Graupner or APC will also help
Master airscrew made "scimitar" props that were fairly good as far as noise went too.
The Latter were for IC engines but I'd be interested to give them a try on an electric motor

Yes, that is an interesting collection of clips Samste - good work on digging them up!

I guess the results would be similar for EDF arrangements.

So I noticed That Edf's now can come in 13/14/18 blades, hence my 90mm Edf 12 Blade may get a upgrade to 18 Blade if i can order the rotor.
I behind the Times, i need to study and get up to date with the Rc World and Parts  Leet

Ordered one of these for My 90mm Stryker edf, possibly get measurements and then possibly 3d print custom ones to suit different setups.
